Chocolate orange

Chocolate orange – nearly

This is something I’d really recommend. It turns out even nicer than bought chocolate orange.

You need:
4 organic oranges (you’re going to be eating the skin)
120g sugar
500mls water
Dark chocolate – to melt (I used 3 bars)

Remove the skin carefully from the oranges, keeping as much of the white as you can. Add the sugar to water, dissolve it, and into the simmering water, add the orange peel strips. Reduce for around half an hour. Taste the oranges; if not bitter, they’re ready.

Add to sugar water.

Drain off the syrup – it tastes lovely too on ice cream.

Lay out the orange strips on a tray for a few hours to dry a little. Carefully melt the chocolate in a bowl above simmering water, or the microwave. Be careful, it’s easy to burn chocolate.

Dip the orange strips into the chocolate. I’ve tried a few ways, with forks, with fingers. I like fingers the best. Again lay out to dry.

Dipping into chocolate.

And they’re ready!  Taste fab, and all that’s left for the compost are the orange pips.
