My poor sister-in-law and brother have had months of angst trying not to let the cat out of the bag. We squeezed in a wee surprise trip home at Christmas on our way East to West before heading North or South.
We descended in a mountain of trainers on poor Lou and Graeme on Christmas evening. Graeme walked coolly back into the living room, where our oblivious mum and dad were sat, with a basket of logs and five new visitors in tow. Thank you so much to you all for helping make Christmas so special. And very sorry mum and dad for telling you we were on another continent. And particularly thank you Lou for feeding our teenage sons.
Charlie and Ellie, you were utter GENIUS keeping that a secret for so long. But please remember, lying is not normally good.
It was so nice to get together, and we just wish we’d had time to get up to Elgin to see the rest of the family.
So now, North or South?
Our original plan was to get back to the campervan in Spain and drive round the bottom of France, down through Italy and over to Tunisia on the ferry. But that involves North and that involves cold.
So the new cunning plan – it is so good not to have had a plan – is to head south in Spain and over to Morocco. We have the tiny hurdle of Algeria between Morocco and Tunisia, so maybe we will look later at the long ferry crossing from Morocco to Italy instead. This is exciting. But we will be careful too.
We often underestimate the dangers of places we do know and overestimate the dangers of places we don’t know. A case in point was Cambodia, which has now shot to the top of the wish list after us being a bit scared of going there.
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

….. as we set sail for Morocco (after a week of work for me, some campervan TLC for Neil, and a homework catchup for the kids).
….. and after a lovely few days back on the farm in Alicante with Michiel, Myrna and Renny to take in the New Year.
